Tips for writing a CV

Please find below our hints and tips to ensure that your CV will always be on the top of a potential employers pile.

A good CV should ideally cover no more than two pages, three maximum. You should aim to ensure the content of the CV is concise and relevant and structured well – use bullet points where possible to  help minimise a ‘busy looking’ page.

Personal Details.

Always place your Personal Details at the top of the CV. Start with your name in bold letters and list your Contact Details and Date of Birth (used for duplicate candidate checks)

Personal Profile.

Begin your CV with a Personal Profile. Short and simple statements! List your capabilities, strengths and attributes and try to relate them to the requirements of the job. List also your personal strengths.  The statements should mirror your personality, your skills and your experience but you need to be able to back these statements up!

Education.

If you are a recent graduate, school leaver or if have minimum employment experience then list your education next. Include names of schools/universities/colleges, dates, certification and training. Begin with school and work forward listing your most recent first. If your CV boasts a vast amount of employment or employment over a long period of time, list your education information at the end of your CV before your references.

Professional Qualifications.

List any professional qualifications for example certifications or accreditations that are relevant to your employment. This will indicate your credibility. List also any relevant professional memberships. Mention any achievements – these do not have to be work related, especially if you have minimum employment history.

Employment History / Career History.

List your career history in reverse date order starting with the most recent role. Remember to include months and years for start and end dates for previous positions. This will avoid a vague looking career history.  Employers do not like gaps in employment history and will always question it.

List your employment as follows:

Job Title, Company Name, Dates (Month/year.)  LIST THIS IN BOLD TEXT.

Underneath detail your responsibilities and any achievements. Ensure that your descriptions are clear and simple if they are not already clear from your job title.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU LIST YOUR CURRENT EMPLOYERS NAME ON YOUR CV EVEN IF YOU ARE STILL IN THE ROLE. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO ENSURE THAT YOUR CV IS NOT SENT TO YOUR CURRENT EMPLOYER WHILST WE ARE SEEKING NEW EMPLOYMENT FOR YOU.

Skills

It would be beneficial to include any computer skills e.g. any training and knowledge of more complex and specialist programmes and any foreign languages (ONLY if they are beneficial to the role or you are a fluent, confident speaker of the language.

Hobbies.

It is helpful to your potential employer to list any hobbies that reflect qualities which may relate to the job requirements. It will also give them an insight into your characteristics and allow them to see if you will fit into their working environment and work well with colleagues.

References.

List your referees as follows: Job Title, Employers Name and Contact Details – phone and email. We advise to list 2 previous employers who will be reliable and will provide excellent references on request.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU DO NOT PUT YOUR CURRENT EMPLOYER AS A REFEREE UNLESS THEY HAVE AGREED AND ARE AWARE THAT YOU ARE SEEKING NEW EMPLOYMENT. REFERENCES ARE SOMETIMES OBTAINED PRIOR TO INTERVIEWS.

Finally….

Please proof read and carry out a spell check on your CV before submitting it to us. It is important that company names are correct as they are not always picked up by a spell check. Keep your CV up to date – ensure that when you add your most recent position add the leaving date of your last post  and change other roles to refer to the past tense.
